Do You Need to Reseal Granite Worktops? (A Simple 5-Minute Test)

Unlike quartz, granite is a natural, porous stone that requires sealing to protect it from stains. At Tudor Granite, we apply a professional-grade sealant to every installation. But how do you know when it's time to do it again? This practical guide, a key part of our worktop care series, gives you a foolproof test.

Why Sealing Granite is Essential

Think of granite as a very, very dense sponge. Sealing it fills the microscopic pores in the stone, creating an invisible barrier that prevents liquids from soaking in. Without a sealant, spills like red wine or oil can penetrate the stone and cause a permanent stain.

The Simple 5-Minute Water Test

You don't need to guess. This simple test will tell you if your sealant is still working effectively.

  1. Clean and Dry an Area: Choose a section of your worktop, clean it with soap and water, and dry it thoroughly.
  2. Create a Puddle: Pour a small puddle of water, about the size of a coaster, onto the dry surface.
  3. Watch and Wait: Now, just watch the water and time how long it takes for the stone underneath to darken.

Interpreting the Results

  • After 5 minutes, the water is still perfectly beaded up: Your sealant is in excellent condition. No action needed.
  • Within 2-3 minutes, you see a dark patch forming under the water: The stone is absorbing the water. Your sealant is wearing thin, and you should plan to reseal it soon.
  • Almost immediately, the water darkens the stone: Your sealant is no longer effective. You should reseal the worktop as soon as possible to protect it.

How Often Should You Reseal Granite?

There's no single answer. It depends on how porous your specific type of granite is and how heavily you use your kitchen. A good rule of thumb is to perform the water test once a year. For most kitchens, resealing is typically required every 3 to 5 years.

Resealing is a straightforward DIY process involving cleaning the worktop, applying the sealant with a cloth, letting it penetrate, and wiping off the excess. However, a professional service will ensure a perfect application with a high-quality, long-lasting product.
